Enhancement via connecting Wikimedia Commons and Mangrove Reviews into CoMaps in order to display data (images, info, reviews, ratings, etc.) in structured format, keeping in mind CoMap's functionality.
(coz FOSS and OSM are awesome!)
Description:
This project aims to enhance CoMaps into a more comprehensive travel and cultural guide, by integrating Wikimedia Commons data, and also enabling a feature for Mangrove Reviews, as also suggested in the FOSSHACK 2026 forum for project statements and ideas. We intend to provide users with visual context and community-driven insights that remain accessible without a persistent network connection.
The main objectives are:
Media Synchronization: Bundling high-resolution images, proper information in a short yet concise manner, etc. from Wikimedia for places, alongside the map download phase.
Decentralized Feedback: Integration of a database of Mangrove Reviews to offer a private, libre alternative to proprietary rating systems.
Data Contribution: Enabling features (if possible in the given time frame, or in the future) such as - Users can capture photos and submit reviews while on the go, which can be synced back to the global open-source community, upon re-connection.
Recommendation System: A suggestion on which we or future contributors can work upon, in order to show more relevant results when searching for any particular location, using algorithms working on tags/graphs.

This initiative has been made possible due to the robust metadata infrastructure of OpenStreetMap (OSM) ecosystem, Wikimedia's network of providing information for free, and CoMaps for building this great tool for offline map usage! The idea was taken from the problem statements page, where an user gave various suggestions related to what can be improved in CoMaps. We also give significant credit to Edward Betts for his extensive work on linking Wikidata to OSM which was crucial for motivation and insights. We have also used LLMs like Gemini and ChatGPT in order to have the necessary help for the making of this project. And off course, we are really grateful to have this opportunity to be able to participate in this hackathon, and give our best for contribution towards open source! :)
