Getting started with OpenStreetMap: Using and Contributing to the Data

Session Description

This session focuses on learning about the OpenStreetMap Project in brief and using and editing the data on your smartphone.


It will be divided into four parts, and as follows:


  • Introduction to OpenStreetMap: A brief history of the OpenStreetMap Project and showcasing it's impact
  • Using OSM: Installing OsmAnd and Organic Maps, and exploring some of their features, also exploring the main OSM website.
  • Contributing to the OSM Data: Registering an account on OSM, and installing Vespucci and StreetComplete.
  • Mapping Party: Venturing outdoors and editing using Vespucci and StreetComplete.


Requirements


Participants require an Android (preferred) or iOS phone, with adequate storage and an active carrier subscription. To conserve mobile data, please install in advance:

  • OsmAnd,
  • Organic Maps,
  • Every Door, and
  • StreetComplete (Android-only)

Speakers

Nilabrata Sanyal
Student, Active OpenStreetMap Contributor, Open Mapping Guru (HOT Asia-Pacific), Member (OpenStreetMap Foundation)

Nilabrata (going by the moniker NLBRT on the internet) is a hobbyist designer and a student in Computer Science at Siliguri Government Polytechnic. He's actively contributing to OpenStreetMap, the world's largest open geodatabase project, mapping around his hometown of Jalpaiguri, as well as surrounding places like Siliguri, Lataguri, Maynaguri, Dhupguri, and several other remote places across North Bengal. His key focus is on accessibility, pedestrian inclusivity and well-representing the indigenous people through mapping. Aside that, he also focuses on localisation of Free Software in Bengali, as well as redesigning their interfaces to appeal to the general public, pushing for mass adoption.
