Indigenous, High-Performance, Safety-Critical RTOS

Proposal status is Approved
Session Description

As critical infrastructure, aerospace, and defense hardware scale across the country, eliminating foreign software-level vulnerabilities and supply-chain dependencies at the operating system layer has become a necessity. This session introduces redkillOS - an indigenous RTOS built for safety-critical use - through its networking subsystem.

We cover the sources of network latency in an embedded system: some problems shared by common RTOS stacks, how PREEMPT_RT improves the Linux scheduler but not the network stack, and how an RTOS's own primitives (locks, mailboxes, context switches) affect network behaviour.

We benchmark five RTOSes: FreeRTOS, Zephyr, Threadx, Linux-RT and RedkillOS, then look at what happens to a deadline-bound flow when a bulk transfer saturates the network stack. We cover deterministic networking (TSN, DetNet) and its use in industry. Finally, we discuss the requirements for safety certification and its implications for the network stack.

Key Takeaways
  • OS primitives measurably change network behaviour but do not guarantee bounded latency.

  • Stock lwIP provides no per-flow bound, and a deadline flow survives only if the surrounding system supplies one.

  • Performance and safety-certification are separate problems.

Speakers

Prathu Baronia Founder | Redkill Technologies

Prathu Baronia is an operating systems engineer with over 7 years of experience working deep in the software that powers modern chips. He has built & maintained core system software at Qualcomm and Google, from secure firmware to custom kernels, and the Linux kernel itself. He now leads the business building an indigenous, formally verified real-time OS for safety-critical systems. He holds a BTech & M.Tech in Electronics from IIT Bombay.
