Currently the number of people who are self-hosting or even homelabbing is increasingly rapidly. With the rise of open source software and ease of access to internet, deploying your own web server is something that's both easy and fun.
However, the internet has it's own dark corners and malicious users, hence a person's network does become an easy target especially if it's not secured. Thus this talk aims to introduce beginner-to-intermediate tools that can be used for securing home networks whether it's for general day-to-day activities or something more in-depth like a home lab.
Major Objectives
(Beginner) Introduce the reason why home security matters
(Beginner) Firewalls & Ad Blocking
IP Fire, OPNSense, Raspberry Pi
(Beginner) Using SSH, Strong Password Policies
(Intermediate) Ensuring secure endpoint devices such as secure routers, VLANs
(Intermediate) Using Network Monitoring tools
(Advanced) Intrusion Detection & Log Collection
If time permits, a demonstration of firewall with virtual machines
1 IP Fire/OPNSense VM
1 "Home Computer" VM
1 Web Server VM (lightweight ubuntu VM)
Due to limitation of time, the major takeaway will be basic understanding of possible solutions to secure your home network using mainly open source solutions
